Workshop at the Getty: Stories in Art

If you can't see the slide show above click here.

One Saturday in October Magistra got to be a discipula at the Getty Center, Los Angeles

The Getty Museum Educators taught our teacher group just how artists tell stories via art and how one can interpret art themselves.

You'll see in my slide show above I'm acting out Living Art.

This was a fun activity and I gained a lot of insight to the characters being portrayed in Rembrandt's Abduction of Europa -but I don't think I'll quit my day job!

I 'm playing the part of one of Princess Europa's companions: in my art investigation I decided the lady in red (on Europa's left/ our right) was a little bit snooty and shook up. Can you imagine how my dialogue went?

This link opens to an an image of  Rembrandt's Abduction of Europa which you can further enlarge.

Are you interested in learning more about the Dutch painter Rembrandt or the painting itself?

Can you visit Rembrandt in Southern California's Virtual Exhibition where The Abduction of Europa (item 4) is showcased.

Note: On line viewing is probably one of the best ways to view art!

This kind of virtual tour allows one to zoom in and out on the painting- an up close option not even available to a face to face visitor of this work.

(If you've ever visited a museum you can surely remember the assiduous security who are rightfully omnipresent and whose job is to make sure all visitors stay an arm's length from precious works of art.)

By visiting the virtual tour one can also listen to the audio story given by Getty Museum curator of paintings Anne Woollett.

Finally there is one more classically inspired image in the Virtual Tour.
Did you find it? Who is this painting about? Briefly summarize the message given in the audio tour.
